Gertrude “Charlie” Thrift Collins, 92, of Cobbtown died Tuesday, January 31, 2006 at Community Hospice in Vidalia. The Tattnall County native and lifelong resident was the oldest member of the Cobbtown Baptist Church and the Fidelis Sunday School Class. “Miss Charlie” was manager of Cobbtown Hardware for many years and her great joy was in doing for others. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe “Base” Collins and a son-in-law, Louie Mercer.
She is survived by a son, Remer Joe Collins of Cobbtown; two daughters and son-in-law, Gloria Mercer of Cobbtown and Sallie Jo and Jack Thompson of Vidalia; one sister, Gussie Sikes of Cobbtown; six grandchildren, Guy Mercer, Kimberly Vacula, Louisa Hensley, David Thompson, April Clark and Christian Collins; five great grandchildren, Marna Brooks, Trey Sears, J.B. Hensley, John Mitchell Hensley and Anderson Matasuka; two great great grandchildren, Emily Thompson and Jadie-Marie Brooks.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 11 a.m. at Cobbtown Baptist Church with burial in the Sunlight Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday (today) from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
