Dorothy Jean Thorpe Soto, 83, died Saturday, June 12, 2010, in her home in Green Valley, Ariz.

She was born in Richfield, Kan., on March 30, 1926, the sixth of nine children, and was raised on the family farm outside Grand Junction, Colo.

She moved to Nogales, Ariz., in 1944 after her marriage to Frank R. Soto. She was predeceased by her daughters, Margie Ann Soto Stipanuk and Cynthia Sue Soto, and her granddaughter Lauren Michelle Soto.

She is survived by four sons, Thomas Frank Soto of Green Valley, James Alan (Sallie) Soto, Robert Michael (Lorraine) Soto, of Nogales, Christopher David (Kristie) Soto, of Gilbert; a daughter, Barbara Jean (Oscar) Diaz De Leon of Tucson; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her longtime companion Sherman Montgomery.

Dorothy was the owner and operator of the Baskin-Robbins Ice Cream store in Nogales for nearly 30 years where hundreds of teenagers held their first job and enjoyed the delights of ice cream.

In her spare time, Dorothy enjoyed volleyball and bowling. But her greatest passion other than family was her love of playing bridge with friends and family.

Friends are invited to visit and share stories of Dorothy with the family at Martinez Funeral Home, 891 W. Mariposa Rd., in Nogales on Thursday, June 17, from 5-7 p.m.

Services are scheduled for Tuesday, June 29, at 3 p.m. in the Green Valley Community Church at 300 W. Esperanza Blvd., Green Valley. Interment services in Nogales will be held at a later date.

The family requests in lieu of flowers a contribution in Dorothy's name be made to the St. Andrews's Children's Clinic or the Crossroads Mission in Nogales.
