Leah R. Boatner (1943 - 2011)
Leah R. Boatner passed away Friday, Nov. 25, 2011, at a local hospital. Funeral: 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 2, at Carter Metropolitan CME Church, 4601 Wichita St. Burial: Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery. Wake: 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the church.
Leah Ray was born to Albert and Virginia Paul Thornton in Baton Rouge, La. She attended McKinley High School and was the lead majorette for the band. She graduated from Southern University and began her teaching career in Baton Rouge at Perkins Road Elementary School. In 1962 Leah moved with her family to Fort Worth and was an inspirational teacher to many students. Her career in Fort Worth started and ended with Morningside Elementary School. Her career was remarkable for many reasons. She was the first black teacher to integrate Bruce Shulkey Elementary School. She retired in 1995. A devout Christian, Leah most enjoyed assisting her beloved husband, the Rev. Alton Boatner, in their church ministry. They worked very hard together and dedicated themselves to serving their congregation at St. Paul CME Church in Cleburne. She was a Sunday school teacher and developed and worked with the church's Children's Orchestra Dance Group for Heaven. She also served as president of the Ministers' Spouses in D/FW area. For many years she was active in the AKA Sorority in Fort Worth.
Survivors: She leaves with cherished memories, husband, the Rev. Alton Boatner; sisters, Virginia Woodfork (Issac) and Albertine Davis; sister-in-law, Juanita A. Thornton; aunt, Pearl Paul; six nieces; three nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.
