Our district was quite badly shocked last Sunday morning at daylight, when the news was being sent over phone that Mrs. Thornton had died suddenly of heart trouble, it is supposed. Grandma, as she was familiarly called by all who knew her, was born in Ohio, Dec. 9, 1829. Her maiden name was Sarah Fryer. She married Hiram Thornton in 1846. They immediately moved to Pendleton, Ky. and lived there until the year 1862. They then went to Cumberland County, Ill. In 1870 they emigrated to Benton Co.,Texas, come to Barton County, Mo in the Autumn of 1872. Since his death she has lived with her unmarried son James Thornton. She died Feb.14, 1904. Having lived to the ripe age of 75. A great many years longer than the majority of the people. God in his infinite love and mercy spared her life to see all her children safe in homes of their own. She leaves three Daughters, and one son and several grandchildren to mourn her departure. We say mourn but why should we feel sad, when we know that she has done her mission here as faithful as one can. One consolation we have is that her troubles and sorrows are o'er. We cannot call her back nor would we if we could because we feel that she is, asleep with Jesus that blessed sleep, from which none ever wake to weep.
