NEWPORT NEWS - Jane Thornburgh Henley, age 95, passed away Friday, Feb. 25, 2011, at Riverside Regional Medical Center. She was born March 18, 1915, in Glen Ridge, N.J., and had been a resident of the Peninsula for more than 60 years.
Mrs. Henley was preceded in death by parents, Edgar D. and Edith Schroeder ; and her husband, H. deShields Henley.
She attended William and Mary in the 1930's and remained a 'Friend of William and Mary' to this date.
She was a well known Horticulturist and held leadership roles in Hampton Roads Horticulture Society, Chesapeake Garden Club, Bonsai Society, Sierra Club, the Maxwell Garden Club and the Peninsula Council of Garden Clubs.
She is survived by a cousin, Josephine Vaiksnis of Hopkinton, Mass., and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins of the Henley family.
A graveside service is to be conducted at the Peninsula Memorial Park at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 28. A memorial service will follow at 2 p.m. at The Hidenwood, 50 Wellesley Drive. Mark Pauley will conduct the services.
