James Fred Thompson, 85, died Sunday, August 12, 2001 at the WNC Baptist Retirement Home in Asheville following a brief illness.

A native of Buncombe County, he was the son of the late Lon R. and Shirley Rutherford Thompson. He was a member of
West Asheville Baptist Church having served as Sunday school teacher, deacon, and member of the Adult II Sunday School Class. He was also one of the founders of Emma Baptist Church in Asheville. He was an Army veteran of the European Theatre during WW II. At the time of his
retirement in 1975 from the US Postal Service, he was the supervisor of the Main Office in downtown Asheville.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Sarah Graham Thompson, a brother, George Thompson and an infant sister, Nellie Thompson.

Surviving are his daughter, Shirley K. Early of Asheville; son and daughter-in-law, John A. Thompson and wife Harriett Thompson of Kingsport, TN; sisters, Nancy Waugh and Margaret Massie and brother Cecil Thompson, all of Asheville; and four grandchildren, Dennis and Lisa Young and Michael and Julie Thompson.


Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
