Mattie L. Thompson, 87, a resident of Britthaven Nursing Home in Somerset and a former resident of the Day Ridge Community in McCreary County passed away on Wednesday, January 23, 2008 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital in Somerset, Kentucky. She was born April 16, 1920 at Parkers Lake, Kentucky the daughter of the late Joe New and Rhoda New New. She was united in marriage to George Thompson and he preceded her in death in 1982. Mattie was a member of the Day Ridge United Baptist Church in McCreary County. She was a homemaker and loved to garden and quilt. She was a jolly, happy person wholoved to talk and never met a stranger. She will be missed by her family and friends.
Mattie is survived by two daughters, Lola Ann Stephens, Somerset, and Elsie Hill, Battletown, Kentucky; one brother, Austin New of Ohio; twenty four grandchildren; and several great and great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three stepsons, Marshall Thompson, Joe Thompson and Henry Albert Thompson; one daughter, Wilma Jean Thompson; five stepdaughters, Goldie Jones, Jennie Keith, Nannie Simmons, Agnes Brockman and Alice Thompson; three grandchildren; two brothers, Johnny New and Willie New; four sisters, Florence Tucker, Bertha McBride, Lila Childers and Hazel New. Funeral services were held at 2:00 pm., Sunday, January 27, 2008 at Lange & New Bros. Family Funeral Home with Bro. Randy Wiles officiating. Musical selections will include "What A Day That Will Be" and "Where The Roses Never Fade". Pianist; Diane Begley. Visitations were held Saturday evening after 6:00 pm. at Lange & New Bros. Family Funeral Home in Somerset. Burial was in the Barren Fork Cemetery in McCreary County, Kentucky.
