Charlotte was the daughter of Patrick Small, a member of the Smalls of Dirnanean, Perthshire, Scotland and a partner in the fur trading firm, North West Company, and an unknown Cree women. Charlotte spoke both English and Cree.
Charlotte married David Thompson on June 10, 1799, at Île-à-la-Crosse, Saskatchewan. Together they raised 13 children as they travelled as a family while David surveyed and made maps of unexplored Canada.
