Arlys Thomas Bruns, died on September 22, 2012 at Alterra Wynwood in McMinnville.
Graveside services will be held on Friday, September 28, 2012 at 11:30 AM at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
Arlys, daughter of Clarence and Anne Etta Schoenrock Thomas, was born on January 28, 1927 in Ortonville, Minnesota. As a young child, she suffered from a severe case of pneumonia, which left her nearly deaf. Without the help of any special education services, she learned to read lips, graduated from high school with honors, and worked in the banking business for nearly 40 years. After high school she went to work for JC Penney Co., first as a shipping clerk, then a sales clerk and then was promoted to a cashier position for 4 years. During this time she met her future husband, Harvey A. Bruns, a farmer, also of Ortonville. They were married on June 15, 1947 in the Congregational Church. In the fall of 1948 Arlys went to work at Northwestern State Bank, later named Minnwest Bank, in Ortonville as a bank teller for 7 years.
In 1955 the family moved to Sheridan, Oregon to be close to Harvey's family. A few months later they relocated to McMinnville. Arlys went to work for the McMinnville Branch of US National Bank of Oregon on September 16, 1955 as a bank teller for 31 years until 1986. In 1975 she became a certified bank teller and spent a lot of time training new employees as bank tellers. During her 40 years of banking she had a remarkable memory for her customers and treated them with respect and grace.
During retirement, Arlys and Harvey enjoyed spending winters in Arizona and travelling over the State of Oregon, the Northwest and visiting family in Minnesota. Arlys loved to be with her family. She loved being a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She enjoyed cooking and especially baking for her family and having them near her during holidays.
Arlys is survived by her son William (JoAnn) Bruns of Tillamook; grandson Darrick (Jacqueline) Bruns of Corvallis; granddaughter Michelle Bruns of McMinnville; great grandson Henry Wm. Bruns of Corvallis; great granddaughter Avery Grace Bruns of Corvallis and sister Janice Bauer of Kenyon, Minnesota. She was preceded in death by her husband Harvey in 2010.
