Ouita T. Brown, 85, passed on April 5, 2013. Born on October 25, 1927 to John and Beatrice Thomas, she graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in 1944. She earned her BA Degree from LeMoyne College in 1955 and Master's Degree in Education from Memphis State University in 1971. She was a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She began her distinguished career as a Memphis City Schools Teacher in 1955 and for 31 years taught first grade at Magnolia and Cromwell Elementary Schools. She was a devoted 50 year member of Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church and served as member of the Ruth Circle and Deaconess Boards. She was a prolific foreign traveler, visiting countries such as Egypt, Kenya, Philippines and China. She married Johnny C. Brown, Jr. on February 20, 1946. She was predeceased by her husband of 66 years, in 2012. She is survived by her beloved sons, Michael D. Brown, Sr. of Memphis, TN, Johnny C. Brown III, of Chicago, IL, and Keith E. Brown of Falls Church, VA; as well as, her sister, Johnetta M. Thomas and her best friend of 70 years, Gussye M. Sweet, both of Memphis. She was loved by five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, friends and students. Family will receive friends on Thursday, April 11 from 5-7 p.m. at Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church, 2634 Carnes Ave, Memphis, TN. Funeral services will be held Friday, April 12, also at Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church where she will lie in state from 10-10:55 a.m., with the Funeral Ceremony at 11 a.m. Interment will take place at 1 p.m. in the West Tennessee Veterans Cemetery, 4000 Forest Hill-Irene Road, Germantown, TN. 38125 (Published in The Commercial Appeal on April 10, 2013)
