Mrs. Thomas was born 27 March 1911, in Chicago, Illinois, and died 6 December in North Bend. She moved to the Bay area 53 years ago and was a member of the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, Eagles Lodge 538 Auxiliary and Blue Pacific Breakers "CB" Club, where she was known around the Bay Area as "Mama Kentuck."

Survivors include her husband, Jack Thomas of North Bend; son, Joseph Thomas of North Bend; adopted daughter, Mary Hudson; sister, Margaret Rankin of Phoenix, Arizona; five grandchildren and six great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by an adopted daughter Theresa Thomas in 1973.

NOTE: My mother-in-law was the only white woman to be buried in the family cemetery. G. W. "Kentuck" Thomas, her husband's grandfather, is the only white man. The obituary does not mention the grandchildren of the 2 adopted daughters - Mary had 9 and Theresa had 5. Also Theresa's married name was Leaton.

NOTE: Jack and Irene Thomas adopted 2 daughters of the Siletz Tribe in the 1940's. Theresa had 5 children and she was killed in an auto crash near Bandon, Oregon. Mary had 9 children and is also now deceased. At Mary's funeral, we learned that she was the last full blood Siletz Tribal member.

The above biographical information was provided by Joanne Thomas wife of Joe Thomas and daughter-in-law of "Irene" Thomas on 11/12/10.
