The following information was obtained from the Funeral Book of Millie Sarah (Simons) Thomas. Children of Millie Sarah (Simons) and Ephraim Thomas were: Fannie Adaline, Walter Carl, James Franklin, Lillie Valeria, Charles Byron LeRoy, Emma Marinda, Claudia O'Ella, George Belin, Clark Adelbert and Arthur Noble Thomas. She gave up in death: Emma Marinda, August 27, 1905; her husband, Ephriam Dorus, February 4, 1926; Charles Byron LeRoy, August 20, 1942 and James Franklin, April 27, 1943.

Nellie Hazel Thomas was born to Ephraim Dorous and Mille Sarah Simons Thomas on April 18, 1895 in Baxter Springs, Cherokee, Kansas, USA.

The 1910 U.S. Federal Census tells us Nellie H. Thomas [abt age 15] was living in Mattoon (Ward 6), Coles, Illinois with her parents, Ephraim D. and Millie S. Thomas. The family was living at 812 North 22nd Street. Children in the household: Lilly V., Roy E.[Charles], Nellie H., Claudie O., Belin G [George], Clark A. [Adelbert], and Arthur N. Thomas.

A newspaper article was published on Saturday, July 1, 1911 in Mattoon, Coles, Illinois, USA regarding the 86th Birthday Celebration of Nellie's grandmother,Fannie Fickes. The article tells us Nellie's father, E.D. Thomas was living in Alvin, Brazoria,Texas.

Nellie's sister, Fannie and her husband, Frank Meade Copeland were living in Wadsworth, Matagorda, Texas on August 24, 1912 when their son, Frank Kenneth Copeland was born.

Nellie Hazel Thomas married Joseph Zefflick "Z" Butter in 1912, when she was 17 years of age. Their first child, Nell Ella Butter was born on December 7, 1913 in Matagorda County, Texas, USA.

The 1920 U.S. Federal Census tells us Nellie Butter [abt age 24] was living in Justice Precinct 2, Matagorda, Texas with her husband, Z Butter [abt age 54] and two of her children: Nellie and Joe Butter, who was three months old.

Nellie and "Z" Butter were blessed with their 3rd child on October 25, 1925. Sarah Louise Butter was born at 12:50 A.M. in Wadsworth, Matagorda, Texas, USA.

The 1930 U.S. Federal Census shows Nellie H. and Joe Butter living in Justice Precinct 2, Matagorda County, Texas, USA with three of their children: Nellie E., Joe B. and Luiese Butter. The census confirms that Nellie was born in Kansas, she was 17 years of age at her 1st marriage, she was able to read and write, her father was born in Illinois and her mother was born in Mississippi.

The 4th and final child [Lila Faye Butter] of Nellie and Zefflic Butter was born on December 18, 1930 in Matagorda County, Texas, USA at 11:50 A.M.

The 1940 U.S. Federal Census tells us the Butter family was living in the same house in 1935; this home was owned and had a value of $500.00. Nellie lost her husband to death on November 15, 1938. Nellie still had three children in the household: Joe B., Louise and Lelia Faye Butter. Her occupation is listed as Beauty Parlor Operator; she worked 52 weeks in 1939; but it appears her 20 year old son was supporting the family in 1940. The census report also tells us, Nellie's Highest Grade of Education was: High School, 1st year.

"FORMER RESIDENT OF MATTOON DIES

Mrs. Nellie Butter, 63, of Houston, Tex., formerly of Mattoon, died Tuesday afternoon in Houston, according word received by her sister, Mrs. F. A. Copeland of this city. Mrs. Butter, a beauty operator, had been in poor health for several years but in serious condition only a few weeks.

Funeral arrangements are not known here, but services and burial will take place in Houston.

Mrs. Butter was the former Nellie Thomas, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. E. D. Thomas. She spent her girlhood in Mattoon and was married to Joseph Butter in Texas shortly after the Thomas family had moved there from Mattoon. Mr. Butter died about 20 years ago.

Surviving are a son and three daughters, in Texas and Louisiana, six grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Copeland of Mattoon and Mrs. Claudia McLain of Portland, Ore., three brothers in Stockton, Calif., and one in Indianapolis (Arthur Noble Thomas). Two sisters and one of the brothers from California visited Mrs. Butter last summer."
