G.W. "Kentuck" Thomas came to Oregon from Kentucky in the early 1850's settling in Coos County on what is now Kentuck Inlet which was named for him and is where the family cemetery is located. His application for a marriage license in 1861 was refused; the marriage was then done by contract. A civil marriage occured in 1863. G.W. "Kentuck" Thomas was a Pvt. in Capt. Bledsoe's Company of Oregon Mounted Volunteers in the Oregon Indian Warss. Described as 5'10" tall; blue eyes and auburn hair. Six children - Edward Thomas, Oscar Thomas, Sarah Thomas Lewis; Martha Thomas; Elizabeth Thomnas and John Paul Thomas.
