Jeanette (nee Thomas) Lebowsky, age 91, passed away November 12, 2009, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Perrysburg, OH.
She was born to Joseph Bernard and Emilie "Millie" (nee Schaal) Thomas on November 9, 1918, in St. Vincent Hospital, Toledo, OH; the very hospital her maternal Grandfather, Melchior J. Schaal, had built as masonry/brick contractor, completing it in 1875.
Jeanette was fond of the fact that she was born 2 days before the end of World War I; thus, having been alive during all the major U.S. wars in the 20th and 21st centuries to date.
She also was formerly of Point Place area, Perrysburg, OH, and lately, Avalon by Otterbein at Monclova, OH.
She was a 1936 graduate of Central Catholic High School.
On October 3, 1942, Jeanette married the love of her life, Edward G. Lebowsky, at the former St. Mary's Church, Page Street, Toledo, OH. Their love grew and stayed strong until his death in March, 1980, from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
In the early 1960's, after raising her young children Jeanette returned to the work force at the former Lion Store, and was the cashier and head bookkeeper for Werkman's Ace Hardware, Point Place for 17 years. She retired in the mid-1970's to travel with Eddie in their motor home, wintering in Largo, Florida, and spending summers in the U.P. of Michigan. She always said, "I love life," and that she did! Everybody was her friend.
Her hobbies included travel, especially to Florida, Disney World, and the Western states, knitting, crafting, and playing her Hammond organ.
Jeanette always had boundless energy, going back to work after Eddie's death because she was bored. She served as Secretary to the Catholic Charismatic Renewal for the Diocese of Toledo. In that capacity, she traveled to the Holy Land twice, and went to Rome, Italy, where she met Mother Theresa of Calcutta when staying at the Poor Clares' Convent in that city. She was Secretary to the Vicar for Religious, Diocese of Toledo, retiring at age 75 only when budget cuts eliminated her position.
She then volunteered as secretary for the Department of Volunteers at the former Riverside Mercy Hospital and then the Medical Records Department of the Hospice of N.W. Ohio, from 2000 until 2006.
Survivors include son, Edward J. (Martha) Lebowsky of Livonia, MI; daughters, Mary Lou King of Toledo, and Judith "Toody" (Scott) Shook of Perrysburg, OH; grandchildren, Amy Lebowsky, Edward A. Lebowsky, Beth Lebowsky, all of the Detroit area, and Rob (Kate) Lebowsky of Ann Arbor, MI.; Carrie (Bill) Carr, Toledo, and Christy (Dave) Wheeler, Eaton Rapids, MI.; Elizabeth (Timothy Combs) Shook, Toledo; and Stephanie (Matthew) Zunk, Perrysburg; great - grandchildren, Harrison Zarecki, James Carr, Abigail and Ian Wheeler, Aubrey Ann and Timothy Scott Combs, all of Toledo, Ohio and sisters-in-law, Eleanor (nee Lebowsky) Carpenter and Dorothy "Midge" Thomas, both of Toledo.
