John Thomas was the eldest son of John Thomas Sr., although he was named after his grandfather, John Thomas of Exeter, England.
John was the first generation of Thomases in America. He worked as a farmer and a weaver (the family trade). He also served as a soldier in King Phillip's war.
He married Sarah Balston (sometimes shown as Balstone) in 1674. John and Sarah had one known child, Coloniel George Thomas.
John died tragically in a drowning accident in Green Harbor where he was participating in a small whale hunting venture in a small canoe.
His death was such a shock to his son, George, that George could not remain in Marshfield. He left for Warwick Rhode Island in approximately 1800 after the remarriage of his mother to John Foster, where he married Alice Gorton and raised a family.
