COTTAGE GROVE - The funeral Mass will be celebrated Feb. 25 for Marie C. Nowak of Cottage Grove, who died Feb. 20 of age-related causes. She was 84.
Nowak was born April 30, 1921, in Pocahontas, Ill., to George and Clara Benke Thole. She married John Nowak on Dec. 28, 1948, in Highland, Ill. He died Aug. 28, 1993.
She grew up and attended school in Illinois. She left home as an eighth-grader and worked as a practical nurse at St. Joseph Hospital in Highland. She lived in Highland until 1948, then moved to Cottage Grove.
She was a homemaker. She enjoyed bowling and also had volunteered as a league scorekeeper in Cottage Grove. She enjoyed sports and attending her children's and grandchildren's sporting events. She was a Chicago Cubs fan.
Nowak was an active member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, where she led singing at Saturday evening Mass for many years, was an officer in the Altar Society and belonged to the Catholic Daughters of America.
Survivors include three daughters, Patricia McPherson of Ritzville, Wash., Janice Bush of Klawock, Alaska, and Shirley Nowak of Coleman, Wis.; six sons, Michael of Springfield, Robert of Corvallis, Gary, Joseph and Steven, all of Cottage Grove, and William of Globe, Ariz.; a brother, Lawrence Thole of Highland; and 28 grandchildren. Two infant children, Lawrence and Joseph, died previously.
A vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel in Cottage Grove.
Saturday's service will be held at noon at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Cottage Grove. Burial will follow in Fir Grove Cemetery.
