Margot Atwood, 88, of Cape Girardeau, died Friday, October 30, 2009 at The Lutheran Home.

She was born December 21, 1920 in Sergeant Bluff, Iowa to Nicholas Bernard and Cecelia Gertrude Topf Theobald.

She and William H. Atwood were married August 19, 1944 at Chicago, Ill. He died November 8, 1984.

Margot attended Briarcliff College in Sioux City, Iowa and graduated from St. Mary's College of Nursing in Rochester, Minn. with a nursing degree.

In November 1977, she and her family moved to Cape Girardeau from Marble Hill, Mo.

She worked at Southeast Missouri Hospital 14 years until 1987 as a pediatric nurse. She then worked for V.N.A. until 1995 at which time she retired.

She was a member of St. Mary Cathedral, Legion of Mary, and was active in Cursillo.

Survivors include six sons, William Atwood of Mechanicsburg, Ill., Jim Atwood of Cape Girardeau, Richard Atwood of Petersburg, Ill., Thomas Atwood of Farmington, Mo., Chuck Atwood of Palmdale, Calif., Vernon Atwood of La Palma, Calif.; five daughters, Elizabeth Gailey of Chattanooga, Tenn., Barbara Blazek of Hermosa Beach, Calif., Nancy Newman of Fort Mill, S.C., Janie Cox of Cape Girardeau, Mo., Lenda Birnell of Poplar Bluff, Mo.; one brother, Richard J. Theobald of Anthon, Iowa; one sister, Alice Galvin of Sioux City, Iowa; 23 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandson.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, John Atwood; two brothers, Rev. Vincent Theobald, S.V.D. and Jerry Theobald; and sister, Berenice Crabbe.

A rosary will be said at 9:30 AM Saturday, November 7, 2009 at St. Mary Cathedral. A memorial mass will follow at 10:00 AM at St. Mary Cathedral with the Rev. Tom Kiefer officiating.

Memorial contributions may be given to Birthright.
