Welty Orn 'Ted' Thedford, 91, of Abilene, died Tuesday, September 19, 2006. Funeral services will be Friday, September 22, 2006, at 10:30am at Abilene Bible Church 733 Butternut with Dr. Tim Temple officiating under the direction of Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory. Visitation is scheduled for Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Ted was born January 24, 1915 in Noonday, Texas. His family moved to Littlefield, TX where Ted attended public schools. After two years at Texas A & M University, he joined the U.S. Navy and served from 1945-1946 as Seaman First Class. Mr. Thedford moved to Abilene in 1955. He married Ruth Anderson Ensey on June 6, 1964 and was married 31 years before she passed away in 1995.
Mr. Thedford was of the Christian faith and a member of the Abilene Bible Church. During his lifetime he accomplished many things. He was a member of Gideon's International, Lions Club, and the Restaurant Association later becoming a Hall of Honor member. Ted volunteered on the council at Abilene State School and with the Food Bank of Abilene. He also designed the World's Largest Chili Pot to help service and minister to the Ben Richey Boy's Ranch. Mr. Thedford was instrumental in starting Project Graduation in the early 1980's. This became an annual event for the local Abilene High Schools.
Mr. Thedford is survived by sons,; Dr. Ronald Ensey and wife Jane Anne of Las Cruces NM; Rick Ensey and wife Carol (Sammie) of Edmond, OK; Robert Ensey and wife Rose of Tucson, AZ; daughter Marsha Marbut of Haughton, LA; daughter Daphane Thedford, and a special friend, Francis Warren of Abilene, TX.
