Dorothy Orpah Thayer was born on April 11, 1912, to Lovell Thayer and Alma Jones Thayer, at their home near Nora, Nebraska. She passed away on January 22, 2011 at the Good Samaritan Society in Superior, Nebraska at the age of 98 years, 9 months and 11 days.
She attended elementary school at District 53 Rural school, and high school at Ruskin Public School, graduating in 1930. Having taken Normal Training, Dorothy was qualified to teach in rural elementary schools, which she did for several years at rural schools in the area. She later took summer school classes at Hastings College and Kearney State Teachers College, now, UNK.
On June 3, 1936 Dorothy was married to Earl Corman in her parents' home. They began their married life together farming northwest of Cadams, Nebraska. Four children were born to them, Beverly, Marcia, Joy, and Kenneth. In June,1946, they had purchased a farm south of Cadams and moved to that location. Dorothy was active in the Nora United Methodist Church, having joined in 1944, until the closing of the church in June 2006. She actively guided her children in 4-H work and was instrumental in founding the Open Class category of exhibits at the Nuckolls County Fair. She was a 30 year member of the Eastern Star.
One of her favorite activities each summer was preparing and exhibiting her crafts and baked goods at the fair. She served as County Chairperson of the Extension Clubs in 1967 and 1968. She and her husband, Earl, enjoyed Cornhusker football and in later years attended many of the games. In 1975 they began spending winters in Chandler, Arizona. It was there that Earl died on February 21, 1979. In 1990, Dorothy moved to Superior, where she resided until entering the Good Samaritan Center in October, 2005.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Earl, two sisters, Lois Snyder and Genevive Kohl; and by two brothers, Marvin Thayer, and Loren Thayer.
Dorothy is survived by her three daughters and sons-in-law, Beverly Hull (Jack), of Fremont, NE., Marcia Mellott (Jim) of Loveland, CO., Joy Wilson (Don) of Overland Park, KS, her son Kenneth Corman (Judy) of Cadams; by nine grandchildren: Linda (Steve) Prochaska, Sheryl (Keith) Tank, Mike Mellott, Rick (Charleen) Mellott, Russell (Clare) Wilson, Jill (Scott) Allred, David (Deb) Corman, Dan (Becky) Corman and Kathy (Stan) Brennfoerder and nine great-grandchildren: Thomas Prochaska, Sam & Pete Allred, Bo & Kipp Corman, Breanna Brennfoerder, Isabel & Sophia Wilson and Zak Corman; a sister, Fern Troudt of Fremont, NE, as well as several nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
Funeral services will be held Friday, January 28, 2011 at 20:00 AM at the Megrue-Price Funeral Home Chapel in Superior with Rev. Dr. Jocelyn Tupper & Rev. Don Wilson officiating. Eastern Star Service conducted by O.E.S. Chapter 27.
Visitation will be Thursday 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. with family greeting friends from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.
Pallbearers are Dan Corman, Stan Brennfoerder, Russ Wilson, Scott Allred, Mike Mellott, Steve Prochaska, Keith Tank and Rick Mellott.
Honorary Pallbearers are Linda Prochaska, Sheryl Tank, Jill Allred, Kathy Brennfoerder, and David Corman.
Interment was in the Evergreen Cemetery at Superior, Nebraska.
Memorials suggested to First United Methodist Church or Good Samaritan Society.
