Prior to moving west Gridley owned a tanning business on the shore of Schroon's Lake, New York. He moved to Viola, MN in the 1870's. He appears as a team member in the 1874 Viola Gopher Count, which still goes on today. After his 2nd wife was killed in a tornado in July, 1883 we think he and son John A. headed further west to Nebraska sometime after John's daughter was born in December, 1883
