Laura was the 2nd of seven children born to Sarah Mariah Whitney and Lemuel Thayer. Her siblings: William, Lemuel Jr., Charles, Newton, Sarah and Alanson.
On May 4, 1854, Laura married William Henderson Messenger, son of Grove and Pamelia (Gibbons) Messenger in Morrow County Ohio. It was the 2nd marriage for both of them. Her first husband's name may have been Benjamin W. Gilbert.
In 1855, William and Laura moved with his 5 children [with his first wife Elizabeth Manville: Eliza, George, James, Nicholas and William], and moved to Iowa County, Iowa.
On April 22, 1865 their first child, Norton Henry was born and on May 1, William purchased a little over 303 acres of government land in Green Township, Iowa County. The whole family is shown in the 1856 census there. Laura and William had four more children: Sarah Adah [1858-1929]; Eddie Forest [1860-1865]; Ellsworth Grant [1869-1953]; and Alice Elizabeth [1862-1938].
William died in 1889 and is buried in a family plot with his first wife and his mother in Bloomfield, Ohio. Laura was living with her oldest son, Norton Henry, when she died in 1912. She is buried in Wassonville Cemetery just north of Wellman.
