The Anthon Herald, 2 June 1937, page 1: Death came at 10:20 p.m. Thursday, May 27, 1937, to end the suffering of Edward Thayer, pioneer Anthon businessman, who had been critically ill two months since undergoing an operation for a perforated gangrenous appendix. Mr. Thayer passed away in St. Joseph's Hospital in Sioux City with all the members of his family at the bedside. His many weeks of intense suffering were rewarded with a peaceful death. He was 62 years, 3 months and 9 days of age. The deceased became ill suddenly March 29 and was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital and operated on the following day. After spending five weeks in the hospital, Mr. Thayer returned to his home where he remained two weeks. An abscess developed and it was found necessary to take him back to the hospital. There a second operation was performed Friday, May 21. His life was despaired of for two days following the operation but then he rallied and showed an improvement for several days. Last Thursday, however, he suffered a sinking spell, from which his weakened condition made it impossible for him to rally. Everything possible in the way of medical attention and hospital care was done for him, but to no avail. Edward Arthur Thayer was born near Oto February 18, 1875, to Mr. and Mrs. DeLoss Thayer. His mother died when he was eight years old, and he was reared by the late Jeff Curtin and Mrs. Curtin, good friends of the family. As a boy, Edward showed great industry and this trait was characteristic of him throughout his life. He always was a hard worker-ready to lend assistance whenever and wherever he could. Mr. Thayer was married February 7, 1899, to Margaret Eisenmenger at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Oto. Four children were born to them, three of whom, Joseph, Bernard and Cecelia, survive him. A daughter, Veronica, passed away in 1918. Mr. Thayer began farming the same year on the Redden place six miles southeast of Anthon. He bought this farm in 1904 and then moved to Anthon, where he purchased and operated a restaurant and cream station in the building now occupied by the Heald jewelry store and the Deeds barbershop for six years. In 1910 Mr. Thayer bought the Reinhart and Servage hardware store and operated it the remainder of his life. He had been engaged in business in Anthon almost thirty-three years when he passed away. Surviving Mr. Thayer are his widow, Margaret Thayer; two sons, Joseph of Sioux City and Bernard of Anthon; a daughter, Cecelia; a brother, Guy Thayer of Odebolt, Iowa; a sister, Mrs. Cora Morgan of Santa Monica, California, and two grandchildren, Bernard, Jr. and Mariel Thayer of Anthon. His father died two years ago at the age of 89 years and he also was preceded in death by a brother, Bernard, and a sister, Nellie. Funeral services were conducted at 9 a.m. Monday in St. Joseph's Catholic Church with the pastor, Rev. D.K. Hurley, celebrating solemn requiem high mass, assisted by Rev. George Cook of Marcus and Rev. David McGoey of Oto. Business places in town were closed during the funeral in tribute to the pioneer Anthon hardware dealer. Burial was in Mt. St. Joseph Cemetery; Rev. Father Cook, former Anthon pastor, officiated at graveside services. Hudgel's Funeral Service had charge of arrangements.
