Marie was proprietor of the Garden Patch Restaurant in N.J. from 1937-1946. During WWII she volunteered as a Red Cross Candy Striper in Atlantic City, N.J., caring for many young wounded soldiers for which she received an award of recognition.
She was married to Richard A. Thayer Sr., in 1947 in Bristol.
From 1956-1966, she owned Thayer's Gift Shop in Brookline, Mass. She was an elected officer of the Chamber of Commerce in Brookline. She spent many summers vacationing in Wolfeboro with her family. She lived in Drexel Hill, Pa. from 1966-1978. In 1978-2001 she moved to Gulfport, Fla., where she was an active member of the United Methodist Church.
The recipient of numerous poetry awards, her lifetime accumulation of poems was published in 2003 in New Hampshire as "Sophia's Poems." Many of her poems were published in a number of newspapers.
A loving wife and mother, she is predeceased by her husband, Richard A. Thayer and one son, William H. Townsend and is survived by two of her three sons, Francis B. Townsend Jr., Richard A. Thayer Jr., and their wives, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She was an avid Red Sox fan. For the last five years of her life, she has lived with her beloved son, daughter-in-law and grandson in Wolfeboro.
