WINCHESTER, N.H. -- Valda M. (Thatcher) Sherman, 82, of Winchester, a former 20-year resident of Greenfield, Mass., died Tuesday evening, Nov. 15, 2005, at the Cheshire Medical Center in Keene.
She was born in Plainfield, Mass., Jan. 26, 1923, the daughter of Charles and Clara (Thayer) Thatcher. She grew up in Plainfield, graduating from Hallock Memorial School in Plainfield, and in 1941, from Northampton (Mass.) High School. She pursued a career in nursing, attending school at the Pittsfield Hospital, obtaining her license in practical nursing in Boston.
She moved to Keene in 1969, where she worked for 14 years as a cook with the school lunch program at Keene High School. She retired in 1985, moving to Winchester, spending winters in Zephyrhills, Fla.
She enjoyed the outdoors, traveling, camping and bicycling. She and her husband enjoyed bus trips and their trips to Puerto Rico, Hawaii and the Virgin Islands. They enjoyed square dancing and were members of the Swinging Sweethearts of Shelburne Falls, Mass. She also enjoyed sewing, crocheting and reading fictional books.
She was a member of the Winchester Senior Citizens.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Aldophus E. Sherman of Winchester, whom she was married to on April 10, 1943 in Plainfield; a son; three daughters; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters. A son, Ronald E. Sherman, died while serving in Vietnam in 1966. Two brothers, Kingsley B. Thatcher and Floyd Thatcher, and two sisters, Gwenolyn C. Whalley and Doris E. Lee, died earlier.
A memorial service will be held Monday morning at 11 in the First Congregational Church, 43 Silver St., Greenfield. The Rev. Judith Kinley, pastor, and the Rev. Matthew Worrall, pastor of Grace Christian Fellowship Church of Winchester, will officiate. Friends are welcome. Private burial will be in the West Cummington (Mass.) Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mrs. Sherman's memory to the Winchester Ambulance Fund, c/o Town Offices, Parker Street, Winchester, NH 03470
