Auke Terpstra left Rotterdam,Zuid-Holland, Netherlands for New York, arriving on April 19, 1899, at the age of 65 on the ship Maasdam. Auke was widower when he immigrated with 5 of his children; Herman, Jennie, Nellie, Gerrit, and Cornelius.
He died on November 15, 1905, in Chicago, Illinois, having lived a long life of 75 years, and was buried there.
