MUNCIE--Mary C. Standish Ball, 98, passed away Saturday morning, September 18, 2010, at Westminster Village.
She was born July 14, 1912, in Richmond, the daughter of Maude (Horine) Terhune and Harry E. Terhune. Mary graduated from Morton High School in 1930 and Indiana University School of Nursing in 1933.
She served as School Nurse for Delaware County Schools for 25 years; a Surgery Nurse at Ball Memorial Hospital for five years and a private duty nurse for one year.
She raised chinchillas and was involved in the chinchilla business for 25 years.
Mary was instrumental in starting Special Education classes in the Muncie/Delaware County area. She found money or ways to pay for having young children's teeth fixed; or for eyeglasses; health examinations or even hospitalization for needy children.
Mary received the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority Humanitarian Award in 1964. She enjoyed working in her gardens; needlepoint; hooking rugs and playing Bridge. Mary was a gracious and caring woman and will be missed by her family. She was a member of Eden United Church of Christ.
Survivors include her husband, Clay S. Ball, (who she married in 1989), Muncie; one nephew, Tom Bricker (wife-Dolly), Pekin; one niece, Beth Davis, Pueblo, Colorado; two step-grandchildren, Kim Ball and Chris Ball and four grandnieces and grandnephews.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Daniel D. Standish; her sister, Helen Bricker and a step-son, Larry Ball.
Services will be held 1:30 p.m., Monday, September 20, 2010, at The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel with Pastor Jim Behrendt officiating. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory Cemetery, north of Muncie.
Family and friends may call one hour prior to services on Monday, at The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel.
