John Teasdale
Birth: Nov. 12, 1806
Death: Nov. 1, 1855

Accident Victim. A leading Baptist minister and grandfather of poet Sara Teasdale, he was among the 34 people who were killed at the Gasconade Bridge train disaster. Hundreds of St. Louisans prepared for the excursion marking the opening of the Pacific railroad from St. Louis to Jefferson City, Missouri on November 1, 1855. In addition to the 34 people killed, about 100 were injured when the Gasconade Bridge trestle collapsed as the 15 wooden railway cars reached the first pier. Nine of the cars sank at the edge of the Gasconade River & dragged three other cars off the track. Washington King, mayor of St. Louis, was among those injured. The president of the St. Louis city council & the chief engineer were killed.

Sussex County Register, New Jersey - Nov. 1st 1855
On this date an excursion train on the Pacific Railroad broke through a bridge across the Gasconade river, 100 miles west of St. Louis, and out of 700 persons, 29 were killed and some 50 injured. Most of these were leading men of St. Louis, and had been invited to make the trip as guests of the Railroad company. Among the killed was Rev. John Teasdale, a native of Sussex county, and pastor of the Third Baptist Church of St. Louis. He was about 50 years of age, and a son of Major Thomas Teasdale, formerly Surrogate of this county. He had visited his friends and kindred in Sussex but a few weeks previous to his untimely death, and his aged mother had returned with him to make a visit. (bio by: Connie Nisinger)
