|Death: ||Apr. 10, 2011|
Doris Brueggeman departed this life on April 10, 2011 in Brush, Colorado. Doris was born in Ellis County, Oklahoma, in 1924 to Frank and May Taylor. She was raised on a farm three miles from a bend in the Canadian River, playing in the orchards on the white sand creeks there. She was the niece of J. C. Kerr, a longtime state representative from Montrose, Colorado. After spending a summer in the hills above Montrose Lake hiking and enjoying wildlife, she grew to love the mountains.
At the age of 20, she graduated from Northwestern State University in Alva, Oklahoma with honors. Doris then returned to Shattuck, Oklahoma, to teach high school business and English. In 1947, she was severely injured in a tornado which destroyed her home and killed her mother. After a long recovery, she moved to Colorado and began working as a secretary and bookkeeper. She returned to teaching and moved to Wray where she taught in both the Wray and Vernon Schools. There she met and married Virgil Brueggeman, who farmed in Vernon. She and Virgil built up a business which did earthmoving and steel building construction all over the tn-state area. She later managed the Wray Housing Authority for 10 years before retiring. Virgil passed away in 1987.
Doris was active in the Calvary Lutheran Church, Las Viente and the Vernon Supper Club. She loved the outdoors, taking every opportunity to garden and go for walks. She could always find a niche for another plant or flower. She had pets her entire life—a chicken, dogs and especially cats. As a young girl, she was caught sleeping with a chicken in her bed. She loved reading, travel and genealogy. Her travels took her as far away as Egypt where at the age of 69, she climbed Mt. Sinai.
She is survived by her brother Harold Taylor of Weldona, Colorado, and sister Eloise Prewitt of Venita, Oklahoma; children Gail Blach of Wray, Colorado; Mark Brueggeman of Davisburg, Michigan; and Craig Brueggeman of Thornton, Colorado; along with nine grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and two greatgreat grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, April 13, 2011, 10:00 a.m. at the Calvary Lutheran Church in Wray, Colorado with Pastor Tim Davis officiating. Interment was held in the Glendale Cemetery in Vernon, Colorado. Memorials may be made to the Calvary Lutheran Church in Wray, Colorado. Spellman-Schmidt Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
