Nadine Taylor Ashby, long time Provo Oak Hills resident and BYU professor, passed away in Sunnyvale, California on Sunday, Feb. 21, 2010 at age 95 from heart, kidney and lung conditions.

She is survived by a sister, Norma Taylor Gardner (husband, Frank H. Gardner) of Provo; a son, Ned Taylor Ashby and grandson, James W. T. Ashby, both of Sunnyvale, California; and several nieces and nephews.

She was born on July 19, 1914 in Provo to John T. Taylor, Provo grocer and banker, and Sarah Edna Pulsipher Taylor, and was a student body officer at both Provo High and BYU. She majored in Drama, but excelled in many subjects. She studied at NYU, and worked at Midvale High School, the University of Utah and the College of Eastern Utah. Returning to Provo for her son's first years, she taught at Dixie State College from 1950-60, with a year at the University of Northern Colorado to obtain her Master's Degree.

After her father's death, she returned to Provo and work at BYU in 1960, remaining until her retirement in 1979 with a three years interlude obtaining her Ph.D at the University of North Dakota.

She was always very athletic, winning Provo tennis tournaments in singles in the 1930's and again in the 1950's; playing doubles into her eighties. She followed BYU athletics avidly, including football and basketball.

She taught, variously, physical education, economics, consumer economics, business education and communication, shorthand and typewriting, focusing on the latter four at BYU.

She was always active in the LDS church, most often in an understated and unassuming way.

She was a good friend, booster, nurturer and neighbor, with many of her students returning to visit and correspond with her for many years. She was always conscious of her Provo roots, and Dixie connections and delighted in knowing and explaining the relationships and familial ties in both the areas.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, March 1, 2010, at Berg Mortuary of Provo, 185 East Center.Friends may call at the mortuary Sunday from 6-8 p.m. and one hour prior to services. Interment Provo City Cemetery.
