Bessie Viola (Taylor) Rice was the second child of Orval Vern and Bertha Bright (McDaniel) Taylor. She was born in Jefferson Township, Boone County, Indiana, and she lived there her entire life. She attended the Beck School which was situated very close to her home (west of Pleasant View Church). Bessie graduated from the Dover School in 1933, and she was the Boone County delegate to the Indiana State Fair 4-H School in Indianapolis in 1933. She married her husband, Haven Edward Rice, on February 25, 1937, in Indianapolis at the home of Foy Andrews. She had two children: Edward Orval Rice and James Keith Rice (stillborn). Bessie was a lifelong member of Dover Christian Church, and she was a member of the Ladies Aid group there for many years. Bessie worked with her husband on their farm from the late 1930s until the early 1980s. She passed away on January 16, 2010, at the age of 94.
