Dr. James M. “Jim” Tart, 89, of Charlotte died Saturday, Aug. 16, 2014, at his home.

He was born Sept. 12, 1924, in Dunn, son of James M. and Bessie W. Tart. He served as a Navy Corpsman in World War II from 1943 to 1946. He graduated in 1948 from Wake Forest University and married Sylvia Rogers from Smithfield in 1949.

They moved to Philadelphia where he attended Temple Medical School, graduating in 1953. In 1954, Dr. Tart set up Charlotte Women’s Clinic, a solo OB-GYN practice, later adding partners to the practice.

From 1984 to 1985 he served as chief of the OB-GYN Department at Mercy Hospital. Dr. Tart retired in 1993 after practicing medicine in Charlotte for 35 years.

He was an active member of Providence United Methodist Church and a volunteer for MedAssist and the Men’s Shelter of Charlotte.

A memorial service was held 10 a.m. Aug. 19 at Providence United Methodist Church. A private interment will be held at a later date.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Sylvia Rogers Tart; his sons, John and wife Beth of Charlotte, Joseph and wife Kimberly of Chapel Hill, Roger and wife Gail of Fairhope, Ala.; grandsons, David, Edward, Michael, Riley, Patrick, Duncan and Finn.
