Carmen John Tarantino, 73, of Toms River, formerly of Totowa and Paterson, died on Thursday, June 22, 1989. He was a former trustee of the Board of Education and a member of the Board of Assessment in Totowa. Carmen was first elected to the Totowa Board of Education in 1970 and served as president until 1972.

He was born in Paterson and moved to Toms River in 1985, after living 30 years in Totowa. Carmen was a bookbinder at Saint Anthony's Guild in Paterson for 40 years.

Carmen was a former Democratic leader and alderman in Paterson's 8th Ward and worked in the Passaic County Hall of Records for 13 years.

He was president of the Passaic County Credit Union and was a Division of Motor Vehicles agent in Paterson from 1970 to 1980.

Carmen was a former parishioner and usher at Saint James Roman Catholic Church in Totowa. He was a member of the Italian-American Club of Bayville, the Men's Club of Holiday City and the Old Guard of Toms River. Carmen was also a board member of the Tax Assessment Department in Totowa.

Beloved husband of Marie (nee Pascarell) Tarantino. Devoted father of Christopher of Totowa and Dennis of Park Ridge. Dear brother of Christine DeBonis of Saddle Brook. Loving grandfather of 5 grandchildren. Proud great-grandfather of one great-grandson.

Visitation was offered on Saturday, June 24, 1989 from 7-9 PM and Sunday, June 25, 1989 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the Gorny & Gorny Paterson-Clifton Mortuary, 519 Marshall Street, Paterson, NJ 07503. The funeral mass was officiated on Monday, June 26, 1989 at 9:30 AM in Saint James Roman Catholic Church, 32 Saint James Place, Totowa, NJ 07512. Interment followed at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Totowa.
