HARLEY MERLE TALKINGTON Died in Hayward on August 22 at age 91. A Nebraska farm boy, he joined the Navy in 1939, and served until the end of WW II. He was on the U.S.S. Indianapolis when it took the atom bombs from Mare Island to Tinian Island just ten days before they were dropped on Japan. He transferred off the ship just before it was sunk four days later. After the war he met and married his wife Betty. They settled in Hayward in 1951 to raise their three children while Harley worked at the Alameda Naval Air Station as a power plant operator and pipe insulator. Harley remained extremely active in community affairs, involved with the VFW, Seniors In Retirement Service, NARFE, the Castro Valley Moose club, and the Voice of Democracy. By recycling cans and bottles in his back yard, he raised over $18,000 for Alzheimer's research. Harley loved golf, cribbage and traveling with Betty. He is survived by his children Harley James and Michelle, and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife and his daughter Carol Talkington Hillis. Services will be on Tuesday, August 28 at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel of the Chimes, 32992 Mission Boulevard, Hayward, followed by a reception there. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to The Alzheimer's Foundation. Envelopes will be provided at the service.
