MARGARET "PEGGY" TAINTOR GOODRICH, of RED BANK, died at the Navesink House. A New Jersey native, she was an author, Neptune and Monmouth County historian, and founder and first curator of the Neptune Historical Museum (from 1971 to 1987). She was also a founder, charter and life member, and secretary of the Neptune Historical Society; and a founder, past secretary and president of the Neptune Public Library's Board of Trustees and its Neptune Library Association. For many years she was a columnist and history writer for the Ocean Grove & Neptune Times (now called The Times). She graduated from Battin High School, Elizabeth; and Katherine Gibbs School, New York City; and attended Brown University, Providence, R.I. She was an executive member of Monmouth County Heritage Committee, Neptune Board of Architectural Review, Neptune Mayor's Advisory Council, Advisory Board of Allaire Village and a life member of the Historical Society of Ocean Grove. She was a prime mover for Ocean Grove becoming a National and State Historic District and for saving historic Stout Farm, Neptune. She was also secretary of the Neptune Senior Citizen Advisory Council for many years. She was a member and vice president of the Neptune Board of Education, a charter and life member and past president of the Shark River Hills PTA, past president of the Shark River Hills Auxiliary to Jersey Shore Medical Center and a hospital volunteer. She was secretary of Neptune's Tercentenary Committee in 1964; Neptune's Bicentennial Committee in 1976; and Neptune's Centennial Committee in 1979. She received the Bicentennial Award from the New Jersey League of Historical Societies in 1977; the Neptune Citizen of the Year Award in 1979; the Local Historian Award from the League of Historical Societies of New Jersey in 1981; and the Monmouth County Heritage Award in 1983. She was a member of the Monmouth County Historical Association, Shark River Hills Auxiliary to Jersey Shore Medical Center, and secretary, first vice president, and historian of the Navesink House Residents Council. Born and raised in Elizabeth, she lived in Cranford and in Shark River Hills, Neptune, for 35 years before moving to the Navesink House, Red Bank, in 1989. She was predeceased by her husband of 40 years, Robert Rhoades Goodrich, in 1982; a son, James Day Goodrich, in 1993; her parents, Archie R. and Vera Day Taintor; and her only brother, A. Raymond Taintor Jr., in 2000. Surviving are a son, a daughter and five grandchildren.
