Leonard Joseph Taddio of Fredonia died Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2012 following a brief illness.
Born in Dunkirk, New York, on Nov. 6, 1912, he was the son of the late Nicholas and Ludovica (Lucy) Serrone Taddio.
A graduate of Dunkirk High School and the Industrial Teacher Training program at the State University of New York at Buffalo, Mr. Taddio married the former Lilia Waite of Sheridan, New York, on Sept. 1, 1940. They had been married 66 years when she died. He took great pride in having served in the U.S. Navy under Admiral Nimitz in the Pacific Theater until his honorable discharge in 1945.
He worked for American Type Founders for many years, traveling to many places, including the Kennedy Space Center in Dallas, to repair typesetting equipment. In 1956, Mr. Taddio and two partners purchased the Fredonia Printing Company, publisher of the Fredonia Censor. He also owned his own printing firm, Taddio Printing, and continued to do print work for his customers until well into his 97th year.
An avid amateur radio operator, his K2JPL license plates were a familiar sight around town. He mentored many others who were interested in obtaining their own amateur radio operator licenses, helping them learn Morse code and prepare for the exams.
Len was an active participant in the Masonic brotherhood. A member of Forest Lodge 166, Dunkirk Council 25, Dunkirk Chapter 191, and Dunkirk Commandery #40, he held numerous offices, including Master, and was lauded as an "excellent Ritualist who did a wonderful Apron
Presentation." He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.
A long-time member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Forestville, Mr. Taddio printed the Sunday bulletins for many years and was a regular reader at the services.
Len loved sports and was an avid New York Yankees fan. With his gap-toothed smile and gift of gab, he was more than willing to share
his observations about the current state of the Yankee Universe with anyone who would listen.
For the past two years, Len was assisted in his home by devoted caregivers Selena Yerico, Elizabeth Carroll, Pam Waite, Patty Robbins, Pat Byham, and Drusilla Lapp Gonzalez.
He is survived by his two daughters, Elaine Maloney (Dennis) of Lake View, NY, and Linda (Jim) Cowan of Lakewood, NY; seven grandchildren: Lynne (Joseph Tillman) LaMattina of Buffalo, NY; Michelle (Andrew) Mullen of Milwaukee, WI; Ryan (Kylee) LaMattina of Lake View, NY; Timothy (Kara) Maloney of Binghamton, NY; Anne (Brian Steglitz) Cowan of Ann Arbor, MI; Jenna (Jordan) White of Amsterdam, NY; and Laura (Justin DeSorgher) Cowan of Somerville, MA, and seven great-grandchildren. He was also predeceased by his wife of 66 years; a
brother, Felix, of Jamestown, NY; and a sister, Pau-line Wilcox of Dunkirk, NY.
