Leon E. Taylor, 76, of Rt. 2, Manitowoc, retired Great Lakes boat captain,
died Wednesday morning at Veterans Hospital, Wood, Wis., after a several months'
illness.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Urbanek and Schlei Funeral
Home, Manitowoc. The Rev. Gervase Zanotti will officiate and burial will be
in Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc.
Capt. Taylor was born April 5, 1890, at Charlevoix, Mich., son of the late
William and Rose Thompson Taylor. He married Rose Reif April 22, 1922, at
Manistee, Mich., and the couple lived at Cleveland, Ohio, until 1938, coming
to Manitowoc.
Capt. Taylor began sailing with his father when 14 years of age, was a mate for
the Roen Steamship Co., Sturgeon Bay, captain of the Great Lakes Towing Co. tug,
and was tester on trial runs of Coast Guard craft for the United States govern-
ment built at Sturgeon Bay. He was a member of the National Tugmen's Union. He
retired six years ago.
Survivors are the wife, a son, two daughters (Private), and seven grandchildren.
Friends may call at the funeral home after 3 p.m. Friday.
