Rev. Sylvester, a resident of Opelousas, died at 11 p.m. Wednesday, February 10, 1999, in Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center in Lafayette. He was a retired priest.
He attended the old AIC now Opelousas Catholic. The Rev. Sylvester then went to St. Joseph Immaculata Seminary in Covington and La. Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans. He was ordained May 1952 at St. John's Evangelist Cathedral in Lafayette. His duties as a priest brought him to Opelousas, New Iberia, Hathaway, Kaplan, Washington, Ville Platte, Welsh, Coteau Holmes, Church Point, Lewisburg and Eunice. He was a member of the La. Army National Guard and held the position of Chaplain.
Survivors include: his mother, Marie Olivia Lafleur Sylvester of Opelousas; a brother, Berchman Sylvester of Opelousas; and five sisters, Dolores Cormier of Sedona, Ariz., Barbara Ziegler of Conroe, Texas, Germaine Kvimta of Faceland, Texas, Monica Cooper of Huntsville, Texas, and Mary Pitre of Opelousas.
Rev. Sylvester was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Wilfred Sylvester; and a sister, Rose Robert.
Visiting hours will be observed from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. today in Lafond-Ardoin Funeral Home on the Old Sunset Hwy in Opelousas, which is in charge of arrangements. A rosary vigil will be held at 7 p.m. Visiting hours will resume at 8 a.m. Saturday in St. Landry Catholic Church in Opelousas.
