CORONADO, Calif. -- Dale Swisher, a 30-year resident of Coronado, passed away Friday, Feb. 6, 2009, following a courageous battle with non-smokers' lung cancer. Dale was born Nov. 5, 1934, in Gypsum, Kan. He attended college and played basketball at Fort Hays State College, Hays, Kan., and graduated from Washburn University, Topeka, Kan.
After college, Dale went into the Navy Aviation Officer Candidate School program and was commissioned in March 1958, receiving his Navy wings in May 1959. He then opened his own picture-framing business and served many on the peninsula for 25 years. Dale found the passion of his life after he picked up his old trombone and began to play again, 49 years after he had played in his high school band. He and a friend founded the Crown Island Jazz Band and played at numerous locations throughout the San Diego area, including the annual San Diego Jazz Festival. Another of Dale's great passions was Kansas Jayhawk basketball. He followed all the games. Dale and Jerry shared a love for travel that took them to many countries where they enjoyed meeting people and learning new cultures. Dale loved nothing more than being surrounded by family and friends.
