Fern was born on June 27, 1913, in Purdy, Missouri, and she passed away on April 22, 2003, in Castro Valley, with her family by her side. Fern is preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Lena Swindell and her brother, Cleo Swindell. She is survived by her soul mate, Robert S. Palmer; daughter, Ethel Mae Colucci; son and daughter-in-law, Leroy and Sandra Patterson; daughter, Jane Bechtel; son and daughter-in-law, Rolf and Kelly Palmer; daughter, Pamela Sword; sister and brother-in-law, Ruby and Ira Sullivan; sister, Geraldine Price; 16 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; 23 great-great-grandchildren and 3 nieces and nephews.
For many years, Fern owned and operated Macs Restaurant in Exeter. She enjoyed a very successful business which was frequented by local patrons. She retired from the restaurant business in order to return home and care for her invalid husband, which she did for 17 years. After Ted Arnold died, she became the food coordinator for Turning Point, a drug rehabilitation facility.
Fern left Turning Point in order to become an in-home care provider for Dr. Roger Johnson. She subsequently left being an in-home provider and moved to Atascadero, California. While in Atascadero, she became the President and Coordinator of the local Senior Citizens Center.
Fern left Atascadero to be with her soul mate and close friend (Robert) and they lived in Selma and Fresno before moving to Bakersfield in 1985. Fern and Robert spent her remaining years living in Kern City Retirement Community. They lived a very happy and content life in a loving and caring relationship. Fern was loved by all that knew her and she will be deeply missed and always remembered. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Fern to the Alzheimers Disease Association of Kern County (5500 Olive Drive, Bakersfield, CA 93308).
