Sharen Dee Swendsen (Martin) Scholes, 76, our loving mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by family, Saturday, January 26, 2013, following a 14-month courageous fight of colon cancer.
Sharen was born in Pocatello, Idaho on August 26, 1936, to John Howard and Jennie Donnetta (Walters) Swendsen. She was the second of eight children. She grew up in Rexburg, graduated from Madison High School and earned her cosmetology degree from Idaho State University.
She was married to Robert Lee Martin on March 6, 1959, and together they had four daughters and one son.
She was self-employed in Burley and Rexburg as a licensed cosmetologist. As a hairdresser, she imparted style and beauty that would gladden the heart and please the eye.
She shared her talents with many and demonstrated her unconditional love for others.
She was a wonderful mother to many, not just her own children. She liked sewing, quilting, canning, reading, going camping and fishing. She was the happiest when surrounded by her family where she could nurture them with home-cooked meals, haircuts, garden produce, canned goods or a jar of her "famous" pickles.
She loved the gospel and her many callings, especially the Compassionate Service in the Relief Society.
She found the second love of her life, John David Keveren Scholes. They were married in the Mesa Arizona Temple on June 6, 2003, and sealed in the Idaho Falls Temple on August 12, 2004. She loved his seven children as her own. They are the proud grandparents of nine Martin and 25 Scholes grandchildren; two Martin and 25 Scholes great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She will be remembered for her courage, humor and playfulness. Sharen will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her children: Cindy Martin, of Boise, Linda Martin, of Sandy, UT, Julie Martin, of Rigby, Alex Martin, of Rexburg and Jennifer Boling, of Idaho Falls; stepchildren: Gregory (Lydia) Scholes, of West Bountiful, UT, Mikel (Laurie) Scholes, of Ogden, UT, Juliann Gordon (Frank), of Idaho Falls, Bradley (Susan) Scholes, of Idaho Falls, Jolyn (Tony) Bennett, of Boston, Bruce (Brenda) Scholes, of Idaho Falls, Paul (Chandra) Scholes, of Rexburg, and Tammy Scholes, of Idaho Falls; brothers: Douglas (Karin) Swendsen, of Springville, UT, John (Linda) Swendsen, of Idaho Falls, and Brent (Nancy) Swendsen, of Bluffdale, UT; sisters: Judy (Scott) Curtis, of Quartzsite, AZ, Linda (Farrell) Oswald, of Idaho Falls, and Denise (Arthur) Dobbe, of Centerville, UT; and first husband, Robert (Eloise) Martin, of Burley.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Gail (Ron) Campbell; and husband, John David Keveren Scholes.
The family would like to thank the Huntsman Cancer Center and Applegate Hospice (especially Lisa) for their tender care.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 2, at the Rexburg 3rd Ward, 345 S. Third West in Rexburg. The family will greet family and friends from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, January 31, at Russon Brothers Mortuary, 295 N. Main St. in Bountiful, Utah, and from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday prior to the services in Rexburg.
Interment will be at Ririe-Shelton Cemetery in Idaho.
In lieu of flowers, please donate in Sharen's name to the Huntsman Cancer Center in Salt Lake City.
