Carol Sweet Austin died peacefully at home on Wednesday eve- ning surrounded by her family. It was the end of a five year struggle with cancer. A memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 20, at St. Augustin Catholic Church.

Carol was born on January 8, 1947 in Escondido, California and grew up in Des Moines. She attended St. Theresa's and St. Joseph's Academy. She went to college in Colorado and received her undergraduate degree in education. She flew as a stewardess with American Airlines for a year and then returned to the University of Iowa to obtain her Masters in Special Education. She met her husband, Jim, while there, and they married in June, 1973. Carol taught special education in the Des Moines School District from 1973 to 2002.

Throughout her life, Carol loved the outdoors and learning. She enjoyed skiing, hiking and the mountains. Tennis was a passion, played for fun and to win. She continued her education through seminars and workshops and loved book clubs. Carol always lived her life fully, but as her health declined, she became even more set on living each day to its fullest. Whether spending time with friends, or attending musical performances, she went as far and as fast as her body would allow.

Her interests were varied over the years, and she was active in numerous organizations including the League of Attorney Wives (LAW), Junior League, Delta Gamma, The National Education Association and her church, St. Augustin's.

Carol was preceded in death by her brother, Ron Sweet and her father, Bowman Sweet. She is survived by her mother, Bea Sweet; her husband, Jim and her children, Ryan and Whitney.

Carol's family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, March 19, at Dunn's Funeral Home. A vigil service will be held at 5 p.m. Memorial contributions may be given to the Des Moines Public Library or the new Des Moines River Walk.
