Sister Maria E. Sweeney (formerly Sister Maria Edmund) of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died Wednesday morning at the Marian Convent after an illness.
A native of Scranton, Sister Maria was daughter of the late William and Margaret Maher Sweeney. She entered the IHM Congregation from St. Ann's Parish on September 8, 1925, was received into the novitiate on December 28, 1925, and made profession of her vows on December 28, 1927.
In the early years of her teaching career, Sister Maria taught intermediate grades at St. Patrick's, St. Paul's, and St. Ann's Schools in Scranton, also at St. John's in Susquehanna, and St. Cecilia's in Exeter. Later, she became a high school language teacher, serving at St. Rose, Carbondale, Bishop Klonowski, Scranton, and at IHM schools in New York. She was part of a tri-community exchange program, teaching French at Bishop Gallagher High School in Detroit, Michigan. Sister Maria's most recent assignment was at Bishop O'Hara High School in Dunmore, where she served as library assistant. She retired to the Marian Convent in 1988.
Sister Maria had her B.A. degree in English and French from Marywood College, and an M.A. in English from Villanova University. She did further study at the Berlitz School of Foreign Language in New York and also completed a theology program at Marywood College.
Survivors include nieces and nephews. Three brothers and four sisters preceded her in death.
A funeral Service of the Word will be held on Friday at 9:30 a.m. in the Marian Convent chapel. Interment will follow at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow, Pennsylvania. A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated in the Marian Convent chapel on Monday at 10:00 a.m.
