Jane Maniatis, 84, of Denver, died on December 20, 2006.
She was born in Fairfax, Missouri, on October 10, 1922, the daughter of Alberta Lee and Samuel Francis Swearengin. Jane was raised on a farm in Greenwood, Nebraska during the Great Depression and Dust Bowl. Her mother died shortly after giving birth to her ninth child, and after losing their farm, her family left Nebraska to seek work in California. Because of hardships on the way, Jane and part of her family chose to stay in Denver, while her father and the rest of the family moved on to California. In 1939, at the age of 17, Jane married Pete Maniatis, of Denver, who died earlier this year, and they were inseparable for 66 years, except when he served in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific during World War II.
Pete and Jane lost their daughter, Carol Berkey, of Denver, to Lou Gehrig's disease (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, ALS) in 1999. Jane was known for her intelligence, sense of humor, honesty, inexhaustible energy, and strong character. She was deeply involved in the lives of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, and was loved by them all.
Jane is survived by her son Tom of Cambridge, Massachusetts, her grandchildren Ethan and Silas Maniatis, Rhonda Diaz, Robert Berkey, Cindy Sampson, and Richard Berkey, and six great grandchildren. Jane is also survived by her sister Betty Slaughter of Prescott, Arizona.
There will be no funeral.
The family requests that memorial contributions be sent to the ALS Association in honor of Jane's beloved daughter, Carol Berkey.
