Cdr. Dale E. Swanson, USNR Ret., 59, of Goose Creek died Sunday, August 20, 2006 at a local hospital after a short battle with cancer. Dale was a true patriot having served his country in both the military and civil service.
Born September 21, 1946 in Milaca, Minnesota he was the son of the late Eugene Gilbert Swanson and Clarice Victoria Swanson Gillquist (nee Swanson).
A 1968 graduate of the US Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD, Dale began active duty in the US Navy June 5, 1968 and transferred to the Naval Reserve in 1979; he retired with 20 years of military service. His 16 year civil service career at SPAWAR culminated with an award recognizing 36 years of Outstanding Government Service upon retirement. He was a member of the Fleet Reserve Branch 269.
Dale enjoyed electronics and needlework and was a great cook. His time at the "office" at McDaniel's where he and his wife spent time with friends was especially important to him. His wife, LaVerne "Lee" Taylor Swanson, died earlier this year on February 20, 2006.
He will be deeply missed by his mother, Clarice Gillquist, Milaca, MN; children: Matt and wife Maria, Terrevonne, OR, and Robin and husband Tracy, Littlerock, AR; four grandchildren: Coleman, Nicholas, Blaine, and Emily; step-son: Scott Taylor and wife Regina, Atlanta, GA; three step-daughters: Lauri Laney and husband Opie, Raleigh, NC, Seaneen Perrin, Summerville, and Kathy Jones Moncks Corner; sister Donna Pearson and husband Delbert, Milaca, MN; three step-grandchildren: Nick Turner and fiancÚ Amanda, Sara Turner, Kristi Marlowe and husband Joe, and two step great grandchildren: Jared and Ethan Marlowe.
A memorial service will be held locally at a later date; internment with full military honors will be held at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington VA at a later date. McAlister-Smith Funeral Home, 100 S. Goose Creek Blvd., Goose Creek is serving the Swanson family.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Disabled American Veterans, 109 Bee Street, Charleston, SC 29401.
