Charles was born December 19, 1858, in Viroqua, Vernon County, Wisconsin, son of Henry Valentine Swain, born in Ohio in 1833 and Hannah A. Adams, born in Ohio in 1837. He died March 13, 1922 in Moses Lake, Grant County, Washington, aged 63 years, 2 months and 24 days, and was buried in Dayton, Columbia County, Washington, the Dayton City Cemetery.

Charles was married three times. On February 17, 1877 Charles married Mary Jane Appleman in Webster Township, Vernon County, Wisconsin. Mary Jane was born December 21, 1861, in Hocking County, Ohio, daughter of James Appleman and Sarah Chamberlin. She died July 18, 1895, in Barron, Barron County, Wisconsin, aged 33 years, 6 months and 26 days, and was buried there in Wayside Cemetery. Their one known child was Arabell Swain. Charles and Mary Jane were divorced.

Charles second and third wives were Annie and Rosetta (Winnett) Crow, later Brooks after Charles' death.

On October 12, 1884 Mary Jane married Edward Elsworth Knowlton at Barron, Barron County, Wisconsin. Both she and Edward are buried in Wayside Cemetery. Her gravestone there, in the Jason Knowlton family plot, is inscribed "Mary Jane Wife Of Edward Knowlton Died July 18, 1895."
