It was during his assignment to Japan that he met the love of his life, Tomoko Suzuki in 1950. They fell in love, although not able to continue the relationship. But their love for each other never ceased and they were finally reunited seventeen years later. They married in 1967.

Tomoko preceded Al in eternal life by over four years. Tomoko Suzuki Hoffner passed away in Pensacola on December 7, 2010. She was born in Tokyo, Japan on December 21, 1929. Tokyo was where she grew up, and was where she endured World War II. Tomoko lived through several fire bombing attacks, where most of the city of Tokyo was destroyed. Her horrific war experiences included a strafing by a P-51 Mustang fighter plane as she walked along a country road.

But post-war, as the American occupational forces landed in Japan, Tomoko and her countrymen found that they were kind and generous, not at all the foe that were horribly described during the war. Tomoko worked as a receptionist for the U.S. Army Far East Command, receiving commendations for her outstanding service, before embarking on her airline career with Northwest Airlines in the Tokyo office, where she worked for several years before moving to the United States. She was hired by United Airlines and worked at the Monterey Airport, eventually transferring to SATO at the Defense Language Institute. She retired from United in 1994.

Al and Tomoko were married forty-three years. They are survived by their sons; Wallace, Walter, Yo and daughter, Yuki.

They will be interred together at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, DC on Wednesday, September 16, 2015.
