MATHEWS - Erva Lee Sutton Corbett, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister passed away Sunday, June 10, 2007, at Spring Arbor Assisted Living, Williamsburg, Va. Erva was the daughter of the late Norman O. Sutton, Sr. and Mattie Esther Brooks Sutton. She was preceded in death by her son, Danny Kaye Corbett; her sister, Velva Sutton Robertson; and five brothers, Aubrey, Elbert, Venton, Freeman and Lindberg "Lindy" Sutton. Erva is survived by her husband of 65 years, Jesse W. Corbett (JW); her daughter, Janie Delores Corbett; her daughter-in-law, Linda Kruse Corbett; two grandchildren, Julie Dana Corbett Feagin and her husband, Ryan, and Michael Sutton Corbett and his wife, Zaira; great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Kaye Feagin; brother and sister-in-law, Norman and Virginia Sutton; sister-in-law, Jean Sutton; and brother-in-law, O.G. Robertson, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Erva was born at home in Blakes, Mathews County, Va., on July 23, 1922, and was the sixth child of eight. During her childhood, her brother, Venton, nicknamed her "Skinner.' As a 1939 graduate of Cobbs Creek High School, Cobbs Creek, Va., she received the Balfour Award (scholastic and athletic). Erva took one year of postgraduate at Mathews High School, Mathews, Va. She attended banking classes at Rappahannock Community College, Glenns, Va. Erva worked for her father in the Tidewater Inn Restaurant located in Gloucester Court House, Gloucester, Va., for a number of years and Sutt's Barbecue at Hudgins, Va. Erva was a lifetime member of Mathews Chapel Methodist Church, where she held positions of leadership in the Women's Society of Christian Service, Administrative Board, was a Sunday School teacher, Financial Secretary and in the church choir for several years. On Dec. 7, 1941, Erva and Jesse William Corbett were married in the Methodist Parsonage at Cobbs Creek, Va., by the Rev. Jack B. Taylor. She retired in 1981 as Assistant Cashier and Head Bookkeeper from Sovran Bank after 17 years. Sovran was NationsBank and is now Bank of America. Upon retiring, Erva Lee and JW toured the country in their motor home then decided to live six months in Florida and six months in Virginia. In 1982 JW, Velva Sutton Robertson, her sister and her husband, Owen "OG" Robertson, traveled in the motor home to Grand Ole Opry, the Upper Room Chapel, Opryland in Nashville, Tenn. Their travels took them to Knoxville, Tenn., Gatlinburg, Tenn., Great Smokey Mountains, and Natural Bridge, Va. In 1983 their journeys took them to Fort Myers, Fla., Sarasota, Fla., St Augustine, Fla., Orlando, Jekyll Island and St. Simons Island, Ga., Charleston, S.C., Myrtle Beach, S.C., Tampa, Fla., Hershey, Pa., Reading, Pa., Vermont, New Hampshire, New Brunswick, Canada, Nova Scotia, Bar Harbor, Maine, Cape Cod, Mass., Gloucester, Mass., Plymouth, Mass., and Martha's Vineyard. Erva and JW's travels carried them to all parts of the United States, Bermuda and Canada. Erva Lee and JW lived for several years in Chambrel, Williamsburg, Va., then moved to Sanders in Gloucester and in January 2007 moved to Spring Arbor Assisted Living in Williamsburg. She lived her life with grace, dignity, generosity and kindness. She will be greatly missed and forever remembered. The family would like to express their appreciation for the loving care given to her to the staff at Spring Arbor Assisted Living in Williamsburg, Va., and to Heartland Hospice in Newport News, Va. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, June 13, 2007, at Foster-Faulkner Funeral Home, Inc., Mathews. A funeral service will conducted by Pastor Doug Johnson at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 14, at Mathews Chapel United Methodist Church, Cobbs Creek, Va., with burial to follow in H.C. Smither Memorial Cemetery, Hudgins, Va. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Erva Lee's memory to Heartland Hospice, 1835 Fishing Point Drive, Suite 101, Newport News, Va. 23606
