PORTLAND, Maine -- Annie Teresa Collyer Sutton, 70, died peacefully in her home after a yearlong battle with primary peritoneal cancer on Aug. 5, 2010, surrounded by her family. She was the daughter of Lois Erskine Collyer and Walter Collyer and the stepdaughter of Albert Collyer. Annie graduated from Malden (Mass.) High School in 1958 and Malden (Mass.) Hospital School of Nursing in 1961 where she was president of her class.
Annie worked as a nurse in several different hospitals in Maine. In 1981, she came to Westbrook Community Hospital as the Utilization Review Coordinator. Three years later she took on the additional role of the Director of Clinical Information Services. In 1999, when Mercy Hospital took over Westbrook, Annie became the supervisor of their Health Information department until her retirement in 2004.
Annie was active professionally as a consultant to Maine hospitals and health clinics. She was a member of the Maine Health Information and Management Association, serving as its president from 1998-1999, as well as a director. Annie also was a member of the Maine Association of Health Care Quality, serving as the president in 1995. She was a member of the Maine Hospital Association President's Council as well as a long standing member of the Maine Cancer Registry. Annie served as an advisory Board member for the Medical Transcription Training Program at Southern Maine Community College and the Health information Management Program at Kennebec Valley Technical College. She was also a Notary Public and a Dedimus Justice.
Annie and her husband Jack were avid sailors, and for the five years following their retirement, sailed on their boat NOTTUS in the Caribbean and the Bahamas. Annie was an inspirational cook and hostess, both at home and on the boat, and delighted in entertaining family and friends. She was a long time blood donor, having received her six-gallon pin.
Annie was a communicant at the Parish of the Holy Martyrs of North America in Falmouth where she was a member of the parish council and a Eucharistic Minister. She also was a long standing member of the church's choir.
Annie was predeceased by an infant half-brother, Edwin. She is survived by her husband of 48 years, John (Jack) Sutton of Gorham; daughter Joyce Anderson and her husband Kevin of Melrose, Mass., daughter Joan Dollarhite and her husband Gary of Yarmouth, daughter Joelle Wilkins and her husband Steve of West Point, N.Y., and son John (Jay) Sutton and his wife Lea- Anne of Gorham. She is also survived by nine grandchildren; as well as her sister Rita Barbieri and her husband Dick of Southington, Conn., her brother Ron Collyer and his wife Bobbi of Somers, Conn.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visiting hours will be on Sunday, Aug. 8, at Conroy-Tully, Crawford Funeral Home, 172 State St., Portland, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. A Concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 9, at the Parish of the Holy Martyrs of North America, 266 Foreside Rd., Falmouth.
