Edith Marie (Surratt) Michael, 86, widow of James "Jim" Hoyt Michael, of 624 Grubert Avenue, died Thursday, February 5, 2009, at Augusta Medical Center, Fishersville.

She was born December 17, 1922, in Coalwood, WV, a daughter of the late Arnold Pierce and Claudia Mae (Bolt) Surratt.

When she was eight her parents decided to move to Staunton so she could attend V.S.D.B. Edith graduated from VSDB with honors in 1944. After graduating she moved to Washington, D.C. where she worked at various jobs and met her future husband, James Hoyt Michael. They were married at First Presbyterian Church in Staunton.

James "Jim" was also deaf. In 1953 their son, Jimmy (James Pierce), was born. In 1963, they had their daughter, Margaret Ann. After retiring from the United States Geological Survey in 1982, Edith and Margaret moved to their "adopted" hometown of Staunton. Edith was a proud graduate of VSDB and a faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church. She will be missed by all. She was a loving mother to Margaret and Jim.

Family members include a son, James Pierce Michael of Orlando, FL; a daughter, Margaret A. Michael of Staunton; a sister, Phyllis Folks of Fishersville; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, Lester, Virgil, Estel, and Chester Surratt; and two sisters, Beulah (Surratt) Tunstall Allen and Beatrice Surratt Crock.

A Celebration of Life will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, February 9, 2009, in Calvary Baptist Church by Pastors Randy R. Spencer and Bobby Campbell. Burial will follow in Thornrose Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 3 until 5 p.m. Sunday, February 8, 2009, at Calvary Baptist Church.
