Donna Jean Summers Hinkle

Donna Jean Summers Hinkle, went to be with the Lord Friday, February 9, 2007.

She was born in Chicago, Ill. September 28, 1948.

Donna attended Queen of Peace Catholic High School before receiving her associate of nursing degree from Illinois State University.

She then attended the University of Florida and obtained her bachelor' s degree of nursing in 1971. Following graduation, Donna worked for Broward General Hospital in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., where she first met her husband, Charles W. Hinkle of the Fort Lauderdale Police department. They married on the 27th of October 1973 and are still very much in love today.

On April 8, 1978, Donna gave birth to her and Charles' only child, Kelly Marie Hinkle. The family moved to Hernando County in February 1981, and Donna became employed with the then Lykes Memorial Hospital, now Brooksville Regional, where she continued to work until her recent illness.

Charles became a deputy for the Hernando County Sheriff' s office, under the watchful eye of the then Sheriff Melvin Kelly, and he recently retired as a lieutenant to care for his Donna.

For those who knew Donna, no words can describe her friendly, loving attitude towards all people regardless of circumstance. She has taught many people that loving your fellow man is the greatest gift possible. Donna spent her career in the intensive care unit, and although she had many opportunities for promotion, she continually refused advancement because in her words "I enjoy taking care of people." This was Donna' s calling. Anyone who was a patient of Donna' s received the best possible care. She was smart, loving and very patient, spending time with family members and grieving with them when necessary. She was much more than just a nurse.

Donna was the eldest of five children of Mary Jane and Leslie "Les" Summers, and they raised her to be able to take care of her brothers and sisters.

She is survived by her siblings, Barbara Summers of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Lynn Summers of Vero Beach, Fla., Michael Summers of Hollywood, Fla.; sister-inlaw, Bonnie Slater of Brooksville, Fla., and many nieces and nephews.

She has gone to join her baby brother, Robert "Bobby" Summers, whom we still love and miss. We will cherish Donna' s stories of how she grew up in Chicago and had to "walk to school in the snow." Her family' s legacy will live on through her daughter Kelly.

Donna was a devout Catholic attending St. Anthony' s Catholic Church in Brooksville, Fla. She loved watching her Florida Gators and Chicago Bears football games. Her priorities were church, family and friends. She was a fabulous cook and homemaker and loved watching cooking shows.

Donna will be sorely missed but is now with the Lord whom she loves. When once asked how she keeps her positive attitude, she simply replied "I do what the Bible says!"

A gathering of friends will take place 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, February 13, 2007, at the Brooksville Chapel of Brewer & Sons Funeral Homes. Mass will be celebrated 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, February 14, 2007, at St. Anthony' s Catholic Church, Father Donlan celbrant. Donna will be laid to rest at Florida Nationa Cemetery, Bushnell, Fla.
